Work Experience:
Although geophysics generally implies oil exploration, my personal interests and work experience is mainly in the environmental field. I spent two years in the environmental industry doing mainly UXO (unexploded ordnance) work. My job took me all over the country and world, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Kuwait.
Research Interests:
- complex resistivity methods
- ground penetrating radar (GPR)
- humanitarian engineering efforts
- how-to-get-rich-quick methods for early retirement
The grant I am working under is:
NSF Award Number DGE-0638719
Teaching (to be updated frequently):
Here are some of the activities and presentations I have done in the classroom.
Uganda
I recently went to Uganda with the Humanitarian Engineering program from Mines. Here is a presentation I have been showing to science classes. It covers the scientific method, a basic introduction to my research, living in Uganda, and fun facts about my trip.
Bridge Building
In this activity, we discuss various bridge types and their strenths and weaknesses. I also like to show a video of the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsing and discuss some of the physics behind that. This leads into a bridge building competition using popsicle sticks and is always a lot of fun to clean up!
Simple Machines
A walk through simple machines- leads to discussion about simple machines in every day life.
Bicycles
A follow-up exercise to simple machines. Lots of hands on excitement!
Ask Mr. Jackson
An example of one of my favorite activities- Ask Mr. Jackson. Students have the opportunity to submit questions they've been curious about that may not have been answered in the classroom. The next time I come, I present the answers to the best/most interesting questions.
Intro to Geophysics
An introduction to what I do.
Other Interests:
- Baseball- GO ROCKIES!
- Rugby
- Ultimate Frisbee
- All of the wonderful Colorado mountain sports
