In 2004, Tech Camp 101 was
conceived, developed and implemented by a team of graduate students in
the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences at the Colorado
School of Mines (CSM). This week-long summer camp was designed to
expose middle school students from an economically disadvantaged school
district to mathematical concepts through the use of technology.
Updated versions of this camp were offered in the summers of 2005,
2006, and 2007. Based on current research, the camp transitioned over
this period from a single co-ed camp to all-boy and all-girl versions.
In 2008, the Community
College of Aurora (CCA) joined efforts with CSM to offer an additional
school district the Tech Camp 101 experience. This doubled the number
of students involved. The curricula for these camps was also formalized
into a three year repeating sequence. This allows students to attend,
without replicating content, throughout their middle school education.
Tech Camp 101 is offered to
Adams County District 50 (A50) and Aurora Public Schools (APS) middle school students.
