The MCS Department is pleased to announce a new program which will allow students to earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science degree simultaneously.

Features of the Combined Program:
  • Students will be able to complete a Non-Thesis or Thesis M.S. in at least one additional year to the B.S. Normally a Master's Degree takes two years to complete, but with the Combined Program, students can use 6 credit hours towards both degrees. This translates to 10 graduate courses (30 credit hours) for Non-Thesis option, and 6 graduate courses (18 credit hours) and a thesis (12 credit hours) for Thesis option, which the student takes in addition to the normal undergraduate B.S. requirements.
  • Students will not have to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) for admission to the program.
  • The application fee is only $25 for CSM Undergraduates who complete an online application, available at http://www.mines.edu/gradschoolapp/onlineapp.html.

Admission Criteria:
  • Students may not apply for the combined program until they have taken five or more Mathematics classes at CSM (classes transferred from other universities will not be considered). The following courses are considered to be Mathematics (MA) classes:
    • MATH 300: Foundations of Mathematics
    • MATH 315: Differential Equations
    • MATH 323: Probability & Statistics for Engineers I
    • MATH 332: Linear Algebra
    • MATH 333: Mathematical Modeling
    • MATH 358: Discrete Mathematics
    • MATH 401: Real Analysis
    • MATH 407: Introduction to Scientific Computing
    • MATH 433: Mathematical Biology
    • MATH 434: Introduction to Probability
    • MATH 435: Mathematical Statistics
    • MATH 438: Stochastic Models
    • MATH 454: Complex Analysis
    • MATH 455: Partial Differential Equations
In addition to these courses, there may be other courses not in the catalog that are offered by the MCS department that would be considered to be MA courses. If you are not certain about the status of a class, contact Dr. Ganesh.

Application Procedure:
  1. Complete the Online Application available at http://www.mines.edu/gradschoolapp/onlineapp.html.
  2. Indicate whether you are applying for a Non-Thesis or Thesis M.S. in Mathematical & Computer Sciences.
  3. Students are not required to take the GRE, or arrange for transcripts or letters of recommendation, even though these may be requested in the application form. For an online application from CSM undergraduates, the application fee is only $25. There is also no particular need to write up a "Statement of Goals" in the application except to briefly indicate that you are already a MA major at CSM and that you are applying to the Combined B.S./M.S. program in MA. This will ensure that your application will be correctly processed.
