The Department of
Mathematical & Computer Sciences (MCS) at the Colorado School of Mines is composed
of 21 faculty members, nearly 220 undergraduates and 50 graduate students. Housed
in Chauvenet and Stratton Halls on 14th Street in Golden, CO, our department has a
record of continued excellence in teaching and research.
Our department provides both undergraduate and graduate degrees in
- Applied Statistics;
- Computational & Applied Mathematics; and
- Computer Science
Our faculty members are committed to excellence in teaching and research across each of
these areas.

Statistics is Everywhere
Did you know that many people consider Florence Nightingale to be one of the first statisticians? In addition
to her significant contributions to nursing Florence is considered by many to be true pioneer in the visual
presentation of information and statistical graphics. The Nightingale rose diagram, equivalent to a
modern circular histogram, was used to illustrate seasonal sources of patient mortality in the military field
hospital she managed. So it doesn't matter what your area of expertise, a strong background in statistics can
often provide significant contributions or lead to significant results
